The European Union aims to transition towards a low carbon economy by promoting safe and efficient energy and integrating a larger share of variable renewable electricity into the current energy system. To this end, fostering cooperation between policy makers, industry, academics and consumers is essential. Strategic guidance needs to be provided to interest groups that develop technologies that can address Europe´s future energy needs by harnessing the knowledge of a variety of experts involved in the energy sector.
ETIP SNET will set-out a vision for research and innovation for smart networks, storage and integrated systems and engage stakeholders in this vision. It will also identify innovation barriers, notably related to regulation and financing, develop enhanced knowledge-sharing mechanisms that help bring RD&I results to deployment and prepare consolidated stakeholder views on Research and Innovation to European Energy Policy initiatives.
ETIP SNET´s consortium includes key stakeholders such as: European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E), EDSO for Smart Grids, European Association for Storage Of Energy, the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA), Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico (RSE), Technofi and ZABALA Innovation Consulting as coordinator. The associations mentioned are large organizations that bring together the main players in the energy sector (more than 300 companies, organizations, research centers and universities) related to Energy and Smart Grids, which gives an idea of the magnitude and impact that this initiative will have. For now it has established 5 specialized Working Groups and is coordinating with national stakeholders. They will lay down a strategic 10 year Roadmap of R&I actives which synthesize balanced stakeholder views and rely on systematic monitoring and reviews of national, European and international projects.
