H2020 R&D Funds on Urban Energy for everyone except Eastern Europe
From 18th February 2016, I’ve been doing an analysis of the geographical participation in the HORIZON 2020 calls of 2014 and 15. My goal was to identify the participants who have been most active in the Energy calls related to cities environment. Also, to have a relevant number of projects to as part of the analysis , I’ve included in my analysis the urban topics of Energy Efficiency, Low Carbon Economy, Smart Cities and Communities and Energy Efficient Buildings.
After completing it, I am in a position to share the surprising heat map as depicted hereafter:
The heat map illustrates the geographical distribution of coordinators of some 57 projects, all of them coordinating projects included in the CORDIS database (corresponding to projects that have already signed the Grant Agreement with the European Commission).
There are no coordinating entities from the Eastern EU-Countries! Pardon me: There is one! from Latvia.
Just to expand a bit on the process involved, I have performed the analysis with the BUSCO internal tool developed by Zabala innovation consulting: BUSCO is based on the open data generated from the FP7 and H2020 (CORDIS), but also EUREKA, LIFE and EUROSTARS calls. We use this tool to identify potential partners for our customers' projects, and to check the capacities of those potential partners.
The topics reviewed come from 2014-15 Work Programmes. I was able to check the following topics: EE3, EE5, EE7, EE8, EE9, EE10, EE11, EE12, EE13, EE14, EE14, EE19, EE20, EE21, LCE4, LCE8, SCC1, SCC2, EEB2, EEB5, EEB6, EEB7, EEB8.
I am still wondering how big the socio-economic differences between the European Member States are. In fact this is not a big surprise: in October 2015 we found that nearly 60% of the funding in EE, LCE and SCC calls were for partners in Germany, Spain, France, United Kingdom and Italy.
